Project Q&A's Story
Project Q&A began in September 2016, as a social group for Montgomery County, Kansas’ LGBTQ community, and Allies. In the first year, Project grew to have over 20 people regularly attend the socials, gained national partnerships, and, most importantly, created a community for LGBTQ individuals in Southeast Kansas.
In September of 2017, Independence, KS celebrate the first-ever Southeast Kansas Pride, sponsored by Project Q&A. The historic three-day event took place on September 7, 8, 9. The event included a social, family movie night, a drag show, pub crawl, and our Community dinner. Highlights include Gays at the Gallery, which featured a drag show hosted by Lady Bearica Andrews from Brooklyn, NY, with performances by regional drag queens and burlesque performers. The crowning event of Pride was a Community Pot Luck Dinner with local, regional, and national speakers, Kassie Thornton (LA-based comedian), giving the keynote address. Project Q&A hosted over 300 people from all over the country who visited Independence, KS, for the first-ever Southeast Kansas (SEK) Pride celebration. SEK Pride 2017 had numerous local sponsors and two national sponsors, the It Gets Better Project, and the Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative.
In 2018, Project Q&A hosted another successful SEK Pride, which was a week-long celebration with over 500 people attending. Events included a family game night, movie night, a historical exhibit chronicling the LGBT civil rights movement in Kansas City, educational workshops, a carnival, two drag shows, a potluck dinner, pub crawl, church service, and picnic at the Riverside Park. Through two successful pride celebrations and multiple other community events. Project Q&A is becoming a well knowing organization not only in Montgomery County, Kansas, but throughout the region.
Following a third successful SEK Pride in 2019, Project Q&A realized that there is a need for community amongst the rural LGBTQ population. Following SEK Pride, we set out on a new task, becoming an official nonprofit organization, and spreading into other rural communities throughout the country. Project Q&A continues to look ahead and raise awareness for the LGBTQ community living in rural America. We are working with schools to create safe environments for all students, connecting rural families with the resources, and ensuring that rural LGBTQ individuals can live their authentic lives where ever they choose to call home.
