Local politics affects our everyday lives, no matter where we were born.
EU citizens can vote in the 2021 local elections no matter where they live in the UK. While all residents can vote in Scotland and Wales after 2021, many EU citizens in England and Northern Ireland are still in limbo.
The UK adopted a bilateral approach and the only agreements on voting rights so far have been with Spain, Portugal, Luxembourg and Poland. We do not want to end up in a situation where a Romanian or a French citizen at home in the UK cannot vote anymore, while their Polish and Spanish colleagues can. We want to see all EU citizens’ rights guaranteed.
the3million's Young Europeans Network is advocating to preserve the local election democratic rights of EU citizens (and extend them to all residents) and is running a campaign to encourage EU citizens to register to vote and cast their ballot in the May 2021 local elections.
The campaign is part-funded by the Andrew Wainwright Reform Trust and the Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust, but we need to fundraise £5,000 in order to create professionally designed informative content, record and edit videos to promote on social media and speak to EU citizens who are least likely to register to vote.
Please donate today so we can all say this is #OurHomeOurVote.
