Ongoing Support for The Book Thing

We are asking you to support the The Book Thing in our ongoing mission to put unwanted books into the hands of those who want them, for free! Though all our books are free, we still have to pay for things like electricity, building maintenance, insurance, and a small staff. We strive to keep our overhead low and to reuse, recycle, or upcycle everything we can. All funds go directly toward our operating costs and are the reason we can do the  work that we do.

How can you help? By committing to contribute on monthly basis, you will be directly supporting the success of our mission.

As always, we thank you for the honor of being yours in books. We wouldn’t be able to do this without you.

More about our mission:

Inspired by teachers who were unable to acquire the books they needed for their classrooms, we at The Book Thing of Baltimore strive every day to combat economic and access barriers to the invaluable knowledge found in books by taking in unwanted books and putting them into the hands of those who want them. We accomplish our mission by opening our doors every Saturday and Sunday and providing unlimited access to our selection of unwanted books. If someone finds a book they want, they can take it. No catch, no caveats, and no strings attached.

We average 500 visitors per weekend, most of whom leave with at least one armload of books. Where do the free books go? All over the world. We have had thousands of books get taken by different groups who sent them to Africa. We have multiple groups who collect books for prisons, hospitals, etc. We have a partnership with Operation Paperback to provide books for them to send to deployed servicemembers. We have had visitors from all over the US come to get books for personal and academic use. We provide books to teachers, schools, and community centers…

The impact isn’t something that can be truly captured in numbers. Some books never return to us. Some come back many times. Each journey is another life touched and changed forever. In truth, we believe we are changing the world, one soon-to-be-wanted book at a time.
