Goal
Bridgeport Hope School is a small, private, non-profit, K-8 school in the South End of Bridgeport, CT. It was established in 1996 as a non-sectarian home school collective. Today it is a CAIS accredited school and receives no funds from religious bodies.
BHS was intended to become a school in which education of the whole child – from moral to academic aspects – is maximized. Currently the school attracts families seeking small class sizes, attention to moral values, and a solid academic education. The student body is culturally, racially, and religiously diverse. The school acknowledges the existence of God and supports values common to the major world religions: love, respect, purity, devotion, and wisdom.
At BHS, the primary tool for music literacy is the ukulele. Part of the reason is because:
It’s inexpensive
It’s portable
It can play any type of music from anywhere in the world
It sounds good
It’s a solo instrument
It’s an ensemble instrument
It’s an ideal tool for developing the ear
it’s an excellent way to learn harmony and theory
You can sing and strum at the same time
And of course... it’s fun!
Another reason is because we got a donation of 10 ukuleles way back and it's been very successful.
Although BHS is a private school, it serves low to middle income families and does not have a large music budget. A parent volunteered to build a rolling cart to store the instruments and we've purchased a few extra ones when we could. Some students are also fortunate to get their own instruments.
We are outgrowing the cheap soprano ukuleles. So I want to get my students nicer tenor ukuleles. This will give them more space on the fretboard as well as respond better to a low G string. We use low G primarily to have extra range and access to more music.
For the younger kids, the sopranos still work well, and I'd like to continue using the multi-colored aquila strings.
But we need your help to get some new tenor ukuleles. We have 15 empty slots on our cart and there are 15 students in the eldest class this year, so we want to get 15 tenor ukuleles.
Ohana Ukulele has graciously offered us a discount for a classroom set, with straps and bags.
If you could, please consider making a donation to help these kids get some nicer ukuleles to really improve their sound. They've been working hard to prepare for their end-of-the-year concert, and this would be a huge boost to their experience and the entire school's music program.
