Goal
The Augustinians of the Assumption run a migrant shelter on the U.S – Mexico border in El Paso, TX. When migrants are released from the detention centers, they are sent to our shelter and others in the area. Each week we have a mix of men’s groups, women groups, and groups of families that are sent to our shelter. We have groups arriving 3-4 days per week. When a group arrives we provide them with clothing, food, cots, and after three days we help transport them to their U.S sponsor. Shelter entrance near the portable showers
In two weeks we hope to start building three new showers in our shelter for the migrants. These showers will replace four portable showers that are outside in one of the alleyways. These four portable showers have been used since September 2021 and through your generous donations the Assumptionists are paying for the portable showers. The new ones will take two weeks to install and will cost $11,700 to complete. These showers will create a much safer environment for the migrants and staff. Fr. Peter Precourt, A.A explains the operations of the current showers
A young man in his 30’s arrived at our shelter in El Paso in March 2022. He fled his home country of Nicaragua to escape a country that does not respect human rights and that mistreats you and eventually kills you, if you do not agree with its communist government. The journey to the U.S is not easy. He explains:
“It’s very risky and difficult to get here. It’s very sad because you have to pass through many countries, and when you get inspected by the immigration law enforcement and the cartels, some are lucky, and some are not. It’s very tiring; you travel by day and by night, and you pass through very dangerous places. So we fear for our lives, and we fear for our families.” When he arrived at our shelter after the risky and unpredictable journey, he told us, “Well, I feel at home here. I do! As some friends and I were just saying, for me, you are angels that God has placed on our journey, because God does not abandon anyone.”
This is just one story of so many that experience similar experiences of pain and heartache as they travel to the states, and once they arrive, feel safe and at home in our shelter. Think of how many migrants, after being treated like animals elsewhere, would welcome a clean shower, a changing room with clean clothes and medical attention. To show them that as Christians, we will not treat them as animals, but as God’s beloved children – “the least of His brothers and sisters.”
The shelter is currently using portable showers with no changing rooms. There is not much privacy in this set up. The new showers will provide changing rooms and a cleaner environment. It will also free up space on the parish grounds, and will save the shelter money in the long run. Remember, we are currently paying monthly for these portable showers. Your generous donation will help them to feel like someone cares, that they are not alone, that they are not abandoned - God’s love is with them! You have this power in your hands – to become an Angel of Hope for those who have suffered so much. Please be as generous as you can for this very worthy cause.
It would be tremendously helpful to us if you could forward this to your friends and family through social media or email. We know that not everyone can afford to give a donation to help those in need but there is a way to give that is just as important, if you put this on Facebook, others may be able to give and you will have given in the most important way!
Thank you for your prayers and generosity!
