Matilda and her piglets arrived at the sanctuary 5 years ago ...

Matilda's piglets may not be tiny babies anymore, but to us they will always be her little family. Five years on, Penny, Clover, Audrey, Regan, Nancy, Jack and Richard are still together, living as one big family here at the Surge Sanctuary.

Matilda has always been a committed escape artist - she fled the farm she was kept on, giving birth to her piglets in the safety of nearby woods. This brave act saved the whole family. However, she continues to ‘escape,’ and has taught her babies the best escape artist tricks. 

The fencing in the pigs' paddocks has been in place since before we opened the sanctuary.  These intelligent, resourceful pigs fully understand how easy it is to break through and have some fun. We have spent many an hour leading them back home and patching up the fences and weak spots as best we can, but they are in dire need of replacement.

So, for the pigs' 5th birthday, we are launching The Great Escape Birthday Campaign to raise £2,500 to purchase and install 200m of new perimeter border fencing.  

This will allow Matilda and her family to fully enjoy the space: grazing, rooting, snoozing and causing the right kind of mischief, without heading off on their next great escape. 

It might sound funny, and we can admit their naughty pig determination is impressive, but it creates a real safety issue not only for them but for our volunteers.
