Promote Healthcare Equity for Urban American Indians and Alaska Natives!

Join us in our sacred mission to ensure every American Indian and Alaska Native in urban settings receives the healthcare they deserve and maintains a strong connection to their cultural roots.

In the hustle and bustle of urban life, despite our resilience, American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) people often face greater rates of chronic disease, infant mortality, and suicide compared to other populations. Yet, Urban Indian Organizations (UIOs) stand as resilient beacons of hope, serving our urban brothers and sisters who live off-reservation.

Over seventy percent (70%) of American Indian and Alaska Native people live in urban and suburban areas due to federal policies that moved them there as a form of termination and assimilation. However, while the government recognized UIOs to be the trust and treaty provider in urban areas, they can only serve a fraction of this population due to inadequate federal funding even though the United States government promised to provide healthcare through treaties and the trust obligation. UIOs not only provide healthcare services but also serve as cultural sanctuaries, bridging the gap between modern healthcare and traditional healing practices. Despite this critical role, UIOs are chronically underfunded.

At NCUIH, we are a national organization dedicated to advocating and serving the forty-one (41) Title V UIOs across the United States, spanning 38 metropolitan areas and 22 states. NCUIH is committed to the sacred charge of improving the health and cultural well-being of urban AI/AN people. Our work is essential and multifaceted, providing indispensable technical assistance, training, policy advocacy, and cultural support to our communities.
