Goal
Save lives and prevent disabilities by supporting our efforts to deliver vital surgeries to underserved communities.
I'm incredibly grateful to share that I will be participating in the 2026 Bayanihan Medical Mission by Health Assistance and Network Development-Philippines (HAND-Philippines). This mission will take place in Bohol, a rural province that has been severely impacted by natural disasters and ongoing economic hardship. In Bohol, the median yearly family income is only $1,770. Major elective surgeries like hernia repairs and cholecystectomies cost over $1,500, and cataract surgery around $1,000. As a result, these life changing procedures are simply out of reach for many families, costing nearly an entire year's income.
In April 2026, we will bring a team of volunteer doctors and nurses to provide major elective and cataract surgeries at no cost to indigent patients.
Alongside them will be students and youth volunteers like myself, supporting the mission and gaining meaningful experiences. As a current junior in high school with a strong interest in pursing a career in medicine, this opportunity is especially meaningful to me. Being a part of this mission will allow me to assist medical professionals and take an active role in supporting patient care, while learning how healthcare can make a direct and lasting impact on people's lives. This mission is a very impactful opportunity, as it is allowing me to better explore my interest in the medical field and health sciences, while also helping people in need, which is something that I value greatly. My role will be to help support the surgical volunteers in minor surgeries in the community. A significant addition this year will be major gynecologic operations. As gynecology is a field that I am interested in pursuing and learning more about, I believe that this addition is extremely important and will impact the lives of many women.
Volunteer surgeons perform a major elective surgery during our medical mission at Don Emilio Del Valle Hospital, Bohol, Philippines, February 2025.
We still need to cover hospital fees, medications, and supplies, but thanks to strategic partnerships, we have drastically reduced costs to just around $250 per surgery. We plan to perform 275 of these procedures in one mission trip, changing 275 lives for the better. Your contribution means someone in the Philippines can finally receive the care they desperately need. Any donations that you give will go directly toward the mission and helping to serve the communities.
Please donate to our medical mission and give families hope for a brighter future.
Thank you so much for your help and contributions.
With much gratitude,
Greta
