Midstory is a non-profit media think hub—an arts- and culture-focused think tank—dedicated to inspiring, connecting, and educating youth and the public from disparate segments of Toledo by interweaving stories of science, art, and culture. We believe that, once given the proper voice and narrative, our city’s stories speak for themselves and hold the power to influence local and national communities, especially those of struggling post-industrial cities. Midstory publishes work from content creators and community contributors, and fosters local engagement through exhibition of these stories that promote Toledo’s regional identity. Our thought literature and media function to edify and encourage healthy initiatives that will redefine and uplift Toledo in times of uncertainty. Through reflection on our past and present, we explore the notion of home and remember the people who, amidst turmoil and change, are able to make this city their own.
We offer a lens for local Toledoans to value the region’s underrated, sometimes forgotten stories, from personal narratives to regional histories, everything from a review of an independent artist’s exhibition to a Toledoan’s story of immigration. While economic revitalization gains traction downtown, we believe that cultivating a local culture and a sense of belonging for Toledo residents is necessary to sustain current developments throughout economic highs and lows alike. On a practical level, Midstory brings to Toledoans thought pieces on art, culture, and technology in an accessible, free media format. We also aim to highlight city artists, innovators, writers, and youth on our website and at our live events to join our region to broader conversations happening nationwide.
As a non-profit charitable start-up, we are in the process of securing operational funds in order to share our values with the community. All funding will support our initial launch, including cost of labor, website development, and content creation. Eventually, funds will also be used to support resident artists, writers, performers and thinkers.
