Maya's Hope: Medicines for a Girl with PANDAS Syndrome

In Ukraine, parents of children with special needs are encouraged to hand their children over to state care. They are told their children are a burden on society. Children are sent to institutions where they are subjected to abuse and neglect. There is minimal support available to parents who fight to keep their children with them. Maya's Hope wants to help relieve some of the burden on these amazing parents and assist in keeping children with their families, where they belong.

"Hello. My name is Miroslava, my daughter is Victoria. From the age of 3, the child began to have tics in the form of sniffing, blinking eyes, twitching hands, feet, head. Doctors prescribed only sedatives, but they did not help.  Every year she is getting worse and worse.  A year ago, we were admitted to the hospital where she was diagnosed with Tourettes and OCD. Other doctors diagnosed epilepsy. Different treatments were prescribed, but it was not effective.

Only a few months ago, they advised me to see a new doctor. He prescribed tests and determined the cause of the tics. He gave the diagnosis of PANDAS syndrome (strep throat is a common childhood illness. Some kids get it again and again, and a simple round of  antibiotics usually clears it up. But for a small number of children, the infection triggers strange behavior changes known as PANDAS syndrome: Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal infections. With PANDAS, your child may seem to turn into a different person overnight, becoming moody, anxious, aggressive, obsessive compulsive behaviors, and dealing with body movements they can’t control. It can be scary, but once your child is diagnosed with PANDAS and starts treatment, it’s likely they’ll make a full recovery.)

The medicines needed for her treatment are very expensive, we are not able to purchase them. Please help me save the life of my child. I would be very grateful for your help."

Can you help us purchase the medicines Victoria needs to complete her course of treatment?
