In Ukraine, parents of children with special needs are encouraged to hand their children over to state care. They are told their children are a burden on society. Children are sent to institutions where they are subjected to abuse and neglect. There is minimal support available to parents who fight to keep their children with them. Maya's Hope wants to help relieve some of the burden on these amazing parents and assist in keeping children with their families, where they belong.
"The story of our family is unusual. We have three children: Katya 15, Victoria 10 and Masha 5. When Vika was born, the birth was difficult. I was forced to thin my blood. The child had convulsions, she was born at 2 am, and help was provided only at 9 am. The ambulance was driving from Vinnytsia. All the doctors who have heard say that her brain has been damaged so that motor functions cannot be restored.
After 5 years, I became pregnant again, because even my mother said that Katya would be completely alone in this world, and her sister or brother would support Vika in the future! Well, now we are waiting for Masha, we are taking tests, we ask the doctors to be attentive to us, we go to all consultations. The child was born in serious condition, although this time the Caesarean was done. I put the baby to my breast but she lost consciousness. We sent blood samples to England and it turned out that she has a pathology in her pancreas, she is in insulin tumors that destroy glucose and the sugar level drops to zero, which causes the brain to suffer and leads to a coma. The child is 1 month old. All fingers were punctured and she was connected to glucose through a drip. She had surgery but her diet needs to be controlled every minute. She lags behind in development.
With two children, I tried to raise funds, tried to get on television, shouted at the government, because there is a separate budget for rare diseases. Glucose test strips cost a lot, as well as rehabilitation services. A drug that prevents sugar from falling in Ukraine is not registered, such a vicious circle. For this, the officials gave me the status of an inadequate Mom. We survived on a pension of 4800 ($185) for two children. My daughter is 15 years old and my husband and I had a relationship on the verge of breaking up.
And at one point I decided that I could no longer survive this way, I would earn money myself in Poland. My mother cares for Masha and Katya. She is older and cannot care for Vika also. I went to the rehabilitation center / orphanage in our region, explained the situation and asked them to care for Vika.I have been working for a year, then the coronavirus happened, the salary decreased. I keep in touch with educators, help my children as much as I can. I have submitted documents for permanent residence and I plan to bring all 3 of my children to Poland. Both of them need to be treated, developed. Masha is a smart girl but she does not speak. The feeling of guilt does not leave me that I am not doing anything. The more I work, I lose my health and I see that with my own hands I cannot collect such a sum alone. I know for sure that my children need care, warmth, care and a healthy happy family, it just so happened that we are not together due to circumstances."
This case is a little different... This is about getting a family back together as soon as possible by easing their financial burden. Their reunion has been significantly delayed by COVID and borders closing. But things are now moving in the right direction. To make it easier for them we want to purchase diapers, medicines, vitamins and test strips for Vika and Masha for the next 3 months.
