In Ukraine, parents of children with special needs are encouraged to hand their children over to state care. They are told their children are a burden on society. Children are sent to institutions where they are subjected to abuse and neglect. There is minimal support available to parents who fight to keep their children with them. Maya's Hope wants to help relieve some of the burden on these amazing parents and assist in keeping children with their families, where they belong.
Gleb is 5 years old and has Down syndrome. He lives in Ukraine with his mother. When he was diagnosed with Down syndrome, his father left him and his mother, and they haven't heard from him since. He has had three heart surgeries and needs to take Warfarin* daily to prevent blood clots forming.
Maya's Hope's previously purchased a coagulometer for him. The coagulometer measures INR. International normalized ratio (INR) is a measurement of how long it takes blood to form a clot. They then know what dose of Warfarin he needs. Without this machine, he would have to go get blood drawn from a vein each week, rather than just a finger prick at home. They need help to purchase more test strips.
Also, Gleb has an artificial valve in his heart. Therefore, twice a year he needs to go to Kiev for a scheduled examination. This time, the heart is doing well, but significant tooth decay was revealed. Three teeth need to be removed and six need to be treated. But it's not that simple. It is necessary to treat under general anesthesia, which is dangerous for the heart. And also because of taking Warfarin, blood clotting is practically at zero. Any surgical intervention is dangerous with a risk of blood loss. Therefore, after tooth extraction, special hemostatic pads are used and a suture is applied.
Gleb's mother has asked for help, as she does not have that kind of money.
Can you help us purchase blood test strips for Gleb and also raise the funds needed for his urgent dental surgery?
