Goal
This holiday season, help send 1,800 students from low-income schools to their local MATHCOUNTS Competitions! Support from people like you ensures that these incredible opportunities are available across the country, no matter a student's financial situation.
The MATHCOUNTS Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides engaging math programs for over 100,000 students in the U.S. in grades 6-8 each year.
For more than 40 years, MATHCOUNTS has run its Competition Series, organizing and hosting live, in-person mathematics competitions across the country.
And for nearly two decades, they have run the National Math Club, a program providing schools with fun mathematical activities, games, problems, and challenges each month.
For those who are already excited about mathematics, MATHCOUNTS can be a gateway to new concepts and ideas, and allows them to develop their mathematical minds far beyond what may be expected of them at school. In this way, it can truly showcase and highlight the incredible dedication and capabilities of young learners.
And even to those who may perceive math as intimidating or frustrating, MATHCOUNTS is a welcoming opportunity to see math outside of its normal curricular bubble. Students are invited to think about problems as puzzles to be solved, rather than simply homework to be completed. Whatever a student's skill level or personal competitive-ness, MATHCOUNTS demonstrates that math can be interesting, fun, social, and rewarding.
Personally, the MATHCOUNTS Competition Series has had a big impact on my educational trajectory, inspiring me to be a better student and life-long learner. As part of my middle school math team, I was not only able to learn new math concepts and mature my problem-solving skills, but I also grew my endurance for dealing with difficult problems, learned how to discuss my ideas with others, established long-lasting friendships with my teammates, and improved both my self-confidence and academic confidence. Having competed at all levels of competition, from local ones to a national one, I've been able to witness and admire the full breadth of what MATHCOUNTS is doing for middle schoolers across the country.
Now being a math team coach myself, I am thrilled to be able to share pieces of my experience with a younger generation of students. I believe an opportunity like participating in MATHCOUNTS can really be an invaluable addition to a student's mathematical education, with long-term benefits reaching far beyond middle school.
