MISSION
To greatly reduce the number of unwanted dogs in Heroica Mulege through a four pointed approach: Sterilization, Care/Rescue, Adoption, and Education.
100% of your donation goes to feeding Mulege’s neglected/abandoned dogs, spaying/neutering as many dogs as possible, outreach/educational programs, taking care of dogs in the refuge, and an adoption program. Together we can greatly reduce the suffering of Heroica Mulegé's most vulnerable dogs!
OUR 4 POINTED APPROACH
STERILIZATION:
MAR believes that the most important aspect to reducing the number of unwanted dogs is sterilization. MAR fully supports the PAW organization and will assist their efforts to spay and neuter as many dogs as possible. MAR will also work with local veterinarian Dr. Uriel Valdez to get more dogs sterilized. We will prioritize street dogs and then travel to each neighborhood, assisting residents in getting their dog(s) sterilized. This work will continue year-round with a higher focus during summer months so as to minimize the population booms that occur when most expats are away.
EDUCATION:
A MAR representative will drive to each neighborhood to meet residents and share information about sterilization options, clinics, veterinarians, etc. Small flyers with an infographic showing the impact of two unsterilized pets will be distributed. The education will not be shame-based, but rather encourage people to become a part of the solution. MAR and a mascot will offer regular visits/educational sessions in schools about proper pet care. We will aim to create an “animal blessing” event at a local church as a community builder. MAR will renew conversations with local government. We believe that local government has an important role to play here; after all, having feral dogs, potentially causing harm and spreading diseases is not good for any politician or its constituents.
CARE/RESCUE:
Helping save an animal’s life can take many forms; there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. In some instances, feeding an abandoned animal in place is the most humane option. A top priority then is sterilization. In other cases, allowing an abandoned dog to stay on the streets will lead to significant suffering and eventual death. In those instances, bringing a stray into a facility is the most humane action possible.
We are fortunate in that a local, Hector Loreto, already has a refuge in place. We have asked him to join our team as he has proven his deep love and connection to dogs over the years. We will support his efforts as he works with Mulegé's most vulnerable dogs.
ADOPTION:
MAR is committed to finding homes for abandoned dogs. As such, we will use resources such as a website, social media, networking, local adoption events, and continue working with established resources in the US/Canada to create a movement channel for adoptable dogs. Between our small pool of founding members, we have already found homes for dozens of dogs just through simple networking. Our success will increase significantly once we have an established framework.
WHAT WE NEED
SUPPORT:
If you share the goal of reducing the numbers of abandoned dogs, like to collaborate, enjoy working in a friendly and supportive group dynamic, we would love to have you join our team! We need help in various areas so there’s something for everyone to do to help out!
FUNDS:
Our goal is to raise $1,000 per month to cover the following components: year-round sterilization of as many dogs as financially possible, covering costs of food for street dogs & those in the refuge, vaccinations for street dogs and those in the refuge, medication to combat fleas/ticks/worms, gasoline for transportation of animals to and from sterilization, printing of educational flyers for distribution, adoption events in town, improvements to the refuge along with compensation of roughly $15 per day to Hector to run the refuge and execute MAR’s various programs.
What we will NOT spend MAR funds on: Food, medical care, or sterilization of any animals that do not live in H. Mulege.
100% of your funds go DIRECTLY to the MAR cause.

WHO WE ARE
We are a group of animals lovers here in H. Mulegé united by a strong desire to reduce cruelty to animals. Each of us has been involved in animal care and rescue for many years.
Pam Taylor: a 6-month seasonal resident and full-time animal lover with 30 years experience in animal care. She rescued, sponsored sterilization, and housed over 100 cats and countless dogs in Wisconsin. While in Mulegé she dedicates her time to the care of abandoned dogs and to increasing the sterilization efforts.
Gabriella & Andrew Morrison: year round residents to Mulege who have been involved in dog rescue work for years. Nearly retired and small business owners, they bring not only their passion for reducing unwanted dog populations, but also skills in managing organizations, marketing, and web design.
Hector Loreto: MAR is fortunate in that Hector, a Mexican dog lover, already has a refuge here in town. In knowing him through the years, he has proven his commitment, passion, and dedication to reducing the suffering of unwanted dogs. Through his incredible generosity, he has helped save the lives of many dozens.
WHO WE ARE NOT
Initially, we were affiliated with the Santa Rosalia based organization, Colitas Felices Mulegé (CFM). We have terminated that relationship for a couple of reasons: 1. Because of irreconcilable differences between us and its principal member, and 2. Because we believe that the best way to affect change for unwanted dogs in our community is to focus on only those who live within Heroica Mulege.
IN CLOSING
MAR is committed to reducing the numbers of unwanted dogs in Heroica Mulege. We are fortunate in that our town is relatively small and geographically isolated. As such, we truly believe that with a four starred approach, we will see a dramatic decline in the numbers of neglected, abandoned, suffering, and abused dogs.
We thank you for your time and attention. It takes a village to tackle the dog overpopulation problem and we can’t do it without the help of you and others. We look forward to working in collaboration and to having you join our team!
