Goal
The Macaw Project is the next phase of our Just One Tree Program which grows saplings from our mature Almendro Trees to be transplant to bio-sensitive regions of Bocas del Toro, Panama. Almendro Trees are a Keystone Species - many species depend on them - including 16 mammal species, 19 bee species, and over 100 species of birds as well as the highly endangered Great Green Macaw which nests exclusively in the Almendro Tree.
Our goal is to build an aviary specifically designed for breeding and acquire 4 mating pairs rescued from the pet industry, for a captive-breeding program and species-survival plan.
Numbers of this majestic macaw have dropped by more than 50 percent over the past 10 years due to extensive habitat loss throughout the species' Central and South American range. It was listed as an endangered species by the United States in 2015.
