Lebanon—Literacy for Children
Literacy for Children
Literacy Skills for Refugees and Underprivileged Communities
Ministry: Youth & Children / Bible Literacy
Of the 2 million-plus refugees from Syria and Iraq in Lebanon, half of them are under the age of 17. These refugee children face many social, economic and bureaucratic obstacles on top of the linguistic challenges that they have in school. As a result, many are dropping out of formal education. This reduces the literacy rate of refugees and in the future, these children will face exclusion from social and economic opportunities due to their lack of education.
According to a study published by Human Rights Watch, more than half of the registered school-aged children are not enrolled in formal education. Some have never stepped inside a classroom. Considering that this study only includes registered refugee children, the actual number of out-of-school children would be higher.
The Bible Society is conducting Bible-literacy programmes to provide basic reading and writing skills to the children. Through this project, children are given a solid foundation from which they can better integrate back into the formal education system. Your support will be invaluable in giving these children the opportunity to gain the skills they need for the future.
