Goal
While there are no definitive statistics as to number of open educational resources that are written in English, we know that the preponderance of OER are developed by English speakers, for English speakers. We also know that the lack of OER in a multitude of languages only furthers accessibility and equity issues among learners for whom English is not their primary language. In a UNESCO report* from February of this year, "40 % of people globally lack access to education in the language they speak and understand fluently. In some low- and middle-income countries, this figure rises to 90%. More than a quarter of a billion learners are affected."
It has long been a goal of the LibreTexts project to translate the OER on our platforms into languages other than English in order to reach a greater number of learners. All funds raised during our LibreTexts Global Translation for Good campaign will be put to use ensuring quality translations of French and Spanish OER are created and hosted on our site, free and open as OER are meant to be shared, online and off.
