Goal
Our experience tells us that artists are always tending to more than their individual art practices. Artists are integral to movement work and can, when properly supported, provide containers for building the world we so desperately need.
As we witness state violence threaten the security and freedom of so many in our community, Level Ground is getting prepared. Prepared to support our people whatever comes next. Prepared to sustain our staff in continuing this vital work. Prepared to stay nimble and responsive as the landscape shifts and evolves. This looks like creating more robust mutual aid offerings, programming differently for what lies ahead, and leaving space to grieve.
Level Ground has always been committed to working with those most affected by racialized and gendered capitalism. 83% of our artist community identifies as BIPOC, 63% as queer, 40% as trans or non-binary, and 37% as Black. 37% earn below $26,000/year while living in Los Angeles County. It’s never been more urgent for Level Ground to be able to sustain the wellbeing and livelihood of our community. An artist who can successfully tend to their own survival, can also tend to movement work and building a better future.
If you’re reading this and find yourself with resources at your disposal, would you please consider donating to Level Ground? Federal funding for organizations like ours is being slashed every day, and we rely on the generosity of individuals with access to resources and privilege to keep this work going.
Your financial support will help us reach our goals for this year (and beyond) by seeding the following priorities:
- Offer grant and mutual aid funds to Level Ground artists
- Launch a new program called Social Practice Labs where we collectively read revolutionary texts and engage frameworks of liberation and abolition in and through our art practices
- Hire a new staff member to focus on sustainability, fundraising and development
- Pay our staff a full-time, living wage
- Provide health insurance to all staff
To learn more, you can read our entire 2025-2030 Strategic Plan.
“Without new visions, we don’t know what to build, only what to knock down... Making a revolution is not a series of clever maneuvers and tactics, but a process that can and must transform us.”
― Robin D.G. Kelley, Freedom Dreams: The Black Radical Imagination
