One in every four persons will suffer from a mental health-related illness during their lifetime. In Nigeria, people with mental illness are treated with disdain, and the stigmatisation does not allow people with this condition to seek help. It is common to see people with mental health-related illnesses in rural areas rather than in urban cities in Nigeria. People suffering from psychological breakdown such as schizophrenia are often classed as being possessed with witchcraft and other diabolical magic. As a result of this, many people with psychotic breakdown are often abandoned by family and friends, thereby leaving them with no choice but to roam about and sleep on streets, market places, and other unsafe havens.
