We are raising funds to cover the cost of legal fees for a South Carolina woman who is being charged "desecration of human remains" after miscarrying her pregnancy a few weeks ago. ( https://jessica.substack.com/p/another-woman-arrested-for-her-pregnancy)


She faces up to 10 years in jail if she is found guilty. 


This is not the first case like this we've seen in South Carolina, and unfortunately we all know it won't be the last. 


Update: 9/2


She has great pro-bono national attorneys funding her legal fight and we have connected her to a fantastic local attorney.We have covered all of her living expenses up until this point. We need to raise $10k more for an outpatient mental health program and hotel costs while we get her into transitional housing.

Update: 7/16


Our client was bailed out of jail on Monday (7/14) and we were able to spend some time with her and ensure she had everything she needed. While it is important for us to maintain her privacy, we want everyone to know that legal counsel has been obtained by her and she is getting the legal help she needs. All money raised for her will go towards legal fees as well as safe living costs for her while she navigates the difficult months ahead. Thank you all for your support. We cannot know what the road ahead looks like for her, but your support has made a huge impact on her quality of life going forward!

I'm so sorry for what you're going through. When I suffered a miscarriage, the laws weren't so crazy hateful and I received a D&C without question along with compassionate care at an Air Force base in Texas no less! I hope you get the support you need and can heal from this experience.

I’m very thankful for the existence of abortion funds always, but especially in the post-Roe era. It breaks my heart every time I think the words “post-Roe.” Every pregnant person deserves compassionate care that follows industry best practices, even if that best practice is a medical abortion, but unfortunately the laws in SC are designed to prevent that, and on top of that, far too many doctors and nurses behave like cops. ACAB. With the system designed specifically to hurt pregnant people to punish them for having sex, even more get caught in the crossfire, like this situation where a woman who should have been sent home to grieve was instead arrested and facing felony charges. It’s simply wrong. The government isn’t going to do anything to help us anymore, so we have to help each other. We are all we’ve got.

I went to Planned Parenthood as a teenager in 1970 and received excellent care. I am a monthly donor to PP for many years. It is frightening that the Handmaids Tale is showing that IT CAN HAPPEN HERE and already is with cases like this one. I wish her and all the women being targeted strength and courage in the face of this oppression.
