A Legacy of Leadership: Honoring Karen Green

Since becoming executive director in 2012, Karen Green has transformed CAT, helping increase adoptions from 25,000 to over 65,000 — saving more than 40,000 lives. In 2014, she introduced a groundbreaking shelter housing model that dramatically improved cat care and adoption outcomes. She also launched specialized programs for senior, FeLV-positive, and FIP-positive cats, and personalized care strategies. Karen fostered a strong, inclusive organizational culture, establishing a Workplace Culture Agreement and DEI Committee, and led CAT to repeatedly be named one of Oregon’s Best Nonprofits to Work For.

As she prepares to step down, supporters are invited to honor her 12 years of service with a Legacy Circle gift to continue the life-saving work she helped build.

I can't imagine CAT without Karen. When we first met, we served on the Board together. Then she quickly became the leader. We will miss you being there. Thank you so much for all you have done for cats and kittens, and their humans, everywhere!

Karen took over CAT and completely transformed the culture and operations. I am in awe of this wonderful lady, and so glad that Kerry and I were volunteers during her tenure. Best of everything in the next journey!

My secret favorite cat (I have five, so it has to be a secret) is a CAT alumna. Karen has also been generous with time and advice to me and to House of Dreams. Thank you for setting the bar higher for cat rescue. You've been an amazing force for good in animal welfare.

I'd always heard good things about CAT, and three weeks after my beloved Moon died last year, I made my first visit there *just to visit* and spend time with cats. So much about my experience there was overwhelmingly positive. Staff and volunteers were so friendly, helpful, accommodating, and understanding - they stood by as my family spent over an hour with Louie (then Bowie), fell in love, put a hold on him, and came back and adopted him. We felt really supported and learned a lot, it having been over a decade since we last adopted a cat. I love CAT! I'm so thankful to Karen and to all who have made this organization what it is today. Keep up the good work!
