The Lakes of Maine website is owned and managed by Lake Stewards of Maine. When you donate, you help support the ongoing development of this valuable online resource, as well as, the expansion of volunteer training for community scientists.

Community Scientists are essential to monitoring the health of Maine’s lakes. Lake Stewards of Maine, a statewide nonprofit organization, trains and certifies these volunteers to collect scientifically credible lake data (~1,200 active volunteers). This data is used by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection to monitor lake health. It also helps to inform the Lake Scorecards featured on the Lakes of Maine website. Over 85% of the state's lake data is collected by LSM's community scientists. Lake Stewards of Maine offers the necessary training, resources and critical support these volunteers need to do this important work, at no charge to the volunteers.
