Goal
Right now some of the world’s poorest and most marginalised women are dying needlessly in childbirth. They will not give birth in a health facility, have access to a skilled, clean and safe delivery or emergency obstetric care. For these women, childbirth is a matter of life and death.
But when you ensure that women stay at a maternity waiting home, you are changing the lives of women like Abebeye from Amhara, Ethiopia. She will be there for her newborn baby and family.
In the largely rural region of Amhara, where health centres may be quite some distance from villages, only 1 in 10 women give birth in a health facility with access to a skilled and safe delivery. A maternity waiting home – a government building adjacent to a health centre – ensures that women in labour have access to round-the-clock care.
SafeHands delivers vital safe motherhood information. From films screened on In SafeHands Outreach Tablets to radio campaigns, we reach women in hard-to-reach areas with live saving information.
Will you help transform lives today?
SafeHands works to put information into the hands of women and girls to make decisions over their sexual and reproductive lives.
In 2019 – 2020, we reached 9.8 million people with safe motherhood information in Amhara alone. But we can’t stop there.
While providing safe motherhood information is essential, we do so much more. We work with local midwives to assist their work in delivering antenatal care and refer women to maternity waiting homes. We work with community leaders to build community support for maternity waiting homes. While women can make their own choices, having the support of their husbands, families and communities makes their paths much easier.
