The Komorebi Foundation’s mission is to help others through empowerment and education to create change for the better.
Our main projects are in North Sumatra run by our partner CareSumatra, and we are always looking for other local, national and international projects we can support, recently having raised funds for the homeless in Adelaide, South Australia.
In North Sumatra, our partner CareSumatra implements projects and helps support the local communities and endangered wildlife near Gunung Leuser National Park.
We have four project themes in North Sumatra:
CHILDREN’S EDUCATION
• English and Bahasa lessons for the homeless kids living at the Gotong Royong market
• School building refurbishment and repairs
• Funding for 6 teacher salaries for 3 free classes at:
- Jungle School at Selang Pangeran village
- Dream Class at Porli village
- Sunshine Class at the Gotong Royong market
WOMEN’S PROGRAMS
• Training for homeless women at the Gotong Royong market to start sustainable micro businesses, including recycling plastic bags into saleable hand crocheted items
• Distribution of Days for Girls Personal Care kits
HEALTH AND SANITATION
• Building eco-brick toilet blocks for local communities that do not have toilet facilities
• Ran COVID awareness and soap program in local communities that reached over 2000 households educating on hygiene & social distancing
CONSERVATION
• Secured 2ha of rainforest in the buffer zone next to Gunung Leuser National Park to help the endangered Sumatran Orangutan
• Ranger program to patrol, educate communities and assist with wildlife/farmer conflict in the buffer zone
• Camera trap program for monitoring wildlife in the buffer zone
• Ongoing reforestation and plant nursery in the buffer zone
• Support ROAR (Recycle Or Actively Reduce) Project to help reduce single use plastic waste
