Goal
Walk The Talk has a program called Kids to Kings, led by
Devin Perkins. Kids to Kings is a mental health youth
outreach program focusing on the cause and effects
of Complex Trauma & CPTSD. Their focus is to be a
positive influence and bring newly found information
to young men at an early age, preventing them from
developing unhealthy and damaging “survival mode”
coping skills. Kids to Kings strives to break the cycle and
provide the needed support to help kids become kings.
Kids to Kings began through conversations among
Devin’s childhood friends about what they later found
to be bad habits and trauma passed down through
generations and the solutions to fix them. As Devin
and his friends continued the conversation deeper, they
came across the study of Complex Trauma & CPTSD.
They quickly realized that this was a conversation that
they couldn’t allow their community and culture to be
left out of because they were the ones suffering from
it the most. Kids to Kings’ goal is to be the missing link
and provide the proper guidance and understanding to
young men who have been left out, misunderstood, and
under-served. We provide hands-on workshops, open
and interactive conversations, and most importantly,
an outlet for them to leverage during hard times.
Kids to Kings also educate the kids about healthy
uses of firearms, including gun safety and recreational
shooting, while also addressing the negative ways
some use them in the community and media.
What is complex trauma?
The National Child Traumatic Stress
Network defines it as “Complex trauma
describes both children’s exposure to
multiple traumatic events—often of an
invasive, interpersonal nature—and the
wide-ranging, long-term effects of this
exposure. These events are severe and
pervasive, such as abuse or profound
neglect. They usually occur early in
life and can disrupt many aspects
of the child’s development and the
formation of a sense of self. Since these
events often occur with a caregiver,
they interfere with the child’s ability
to form a secure attachment. Many
aspects of a child’s healthy physical
and mental development rely on this
primary source of safety and stability.”
