Goal
We did it!
Thanks to all of the supporters who helped us reach our stretch goal of $25,000! We’re putting this money, and any more that we raise, to providing an early-career journalist with six months of paid mentorship at Hakai Magazine, including covering the cost of travel for reporting. We’re grateful for your support in making this fundraising campaign a huge success.
Help us foster the next generation of science journalists.
Support Hakai Magazine’s 2022 fellowship program to provide an emerging writer with six months of paid mentorship.
We’re hoping to raise $21,000 in 21 days to cover the salary for a six-month fellowship at our award-winning publication. We only have until February 28 to make it happen. Please help.
Who are we?
Hakai Magazine is the only journalism outlet to focus entirely on the science and societies of the world’s oceans and coastlines. Founded in 2015, in Victoria, British Columbia, we have more than 300,000 monthly readers from across the globe. We’ve won major journalism awards and brought attention to issues that matter: problems such as marine wildlife trafficking and the perils of deep-sea mining; and solutions, from the use of traditional knowledge to restore habitats to communities banding together to fight plastic pollution.
We publish all of our stories exclusively online, without paywalls or ads. The magazine is part of the Tula Foundation, an independent charitable foundation based in Canada.
Hakai Magazine’s fellowship program
Over the past four years, we have hired seven early-career journalists for paid placements ranging from three to eight months. Our fellows are immersed in magazine production, participating in weekly editorial meetings, pitching stories, brainstorming headlines, fact-checking, editing, and writing posts for social media. Hakai Magazine fellows can choose to focus on narrative long-form, news reporting, or editing, and are paired with an experienced journalist to receive mentorship on a project of their choice. In the past, participants have written 5,000-word feature stories, covered science news, produced podcast episodes, and reported from Vancouver, New York City, and Washington, DC.
After their placements, past interns and fellows have been hired as staff at Hakai Magazine and other media outlets, and gone on to work as freelance writers.
“The fellowship has deepened my critical thinking and quality of writing—skills that I will carry on through the rest of my career.”—Marina Wang, 2021 fellow
“The Hakai Magazine fellowship is a journalistic unicorn. It’s rare that emerging journalists are given the time, compensation, and mentorship to cut their feature writing teeth so early in their careers. Even rarer for that mentorship to be specifically in the world of science reporting.”—Brandon Wei, 2020 fellow
Brandon Wei’s feature story, “Survivor: Salmon Edition,” was included in Great Canadian Longform’s Best of 2021 list. See more work from past fellows here.
Thanks to our generous friends at Greystone Books, Rocky Mountain Books, and Harbour Publishing for donating some of our favorite coastal books for us to give away. Those books have now been claimed—thanks to the first 30 people who contributed $125 or more to the campaign.
FAQ
Can I pay by check?
Yes! Please make checks payable to “Tula Foundation.” Our mailing address is Hakai Magazine, 100-1002 Wharf St, Victoria, BC, V8W 1T4, Canada.
Is my contribution to the 2022 fellowship fundraiser tax deductible?
The Tula Foundation is a registered charity in Canada. If you’re a Canadian donor, you will automatically receive a charitable receipt.
How many fellows are you hiring this year?
We’re hiring two fellows for six-month placements with Hakai Magazine in 2022. The Tula Foundation will cover the $21,000 salary for one of the two positions. We’re asking our readers to match that amount to fund the second fellowship. We will pay a dedicated mentor to work one-on-one with each of the fellows, as well as for any costs associated with travel for reporting.
