Jewish Enrichment Center's Chanukah Fundraiser 5782

In the coming weeks, many families in our community will gather (in-person!) twice to express thankfulness and joy, gratitude and celebration. Just three days after Thanksgiving, we will light the chanukiah for the first time this year and recite the Chanukah prayers, including the shehecheyanu, which expresses thanks for the gifts of life and health, and for the fortune to reach “this time.” Those words, already replete with meaning and emotion, will have added significance this year. It has not been easy, for any of us, to reach this time.

Last year, Jewish Enrichment Center children explored shehecheyanu, the blessing said on all new or special occasions, in depth. It helped us look for the brilliance in every long day at home. When we said the blessing, we connected with Jews across the world and through time, and we knew we weren’t alone. Exploring shehecheyanu helped us simultaneously feel gratitude for what we had and express confidence that communal occasions for celebration – Passover seders, hearing the shofar, baby namings – would surely come again.

For all of us at the Jewish Enrichment Center, it feels like a shehecheyanu moment. We have reached this time, together, because over the past twenty months we have shown up for and cared for one another. It’s because of your care for this community that we say shehecheyanu for all that we accomplished last year during incredibly difficult circumstances. And we say shehecheyanu with confidence that there are so many more special occasions and celebrations ahead of us.

As we kick-off our annual Chanukah appeal, we are so thankful that you are a part of our community, and for all the ways that you contribute to it through the gifts of your presence, your participation, your skills, and your philanthropy. Thank you!
