To those who are debating on whether to donate to Ukraine please read my words. To those that have and fear that they have not made a difference read my words and know that you have. Tolstoy spoke about what happens when we let fear rule us. We become compliant with systemic evil. Compliant with with evil that makes good men torture and imprison innocent men, women, and little children. We become desensitized and justify our actions as benign "I am just a cog in the machine, my actions are too small to make a difference" Or "That's just how things are". We then turn a blind eye to their suffering through our inaction, indirect, or direct actions. We are then “lessened” by this. Humanity is interconnected by even small actions. The loss of one affects the community as a whole. This sentiment is echoed by Martin Luther King Jr in his Letter from the Birmingham Jail. “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” This is more than injustice. It is a threat to our democracy. A threat to democracy anywhere is a threat to democracy everywhere. Not just Tolstoy and MLK jr, but many others have echoed that we are interconnected even through small choices. It is not our choices that give human life value. Human life is intrinsically valuable. Our choices create the interconnectedness of humans to one another and can garnish us with intelligence or diminish our intelligence. For Whom the Bell Tolls by John Donne No man is an island, Entire of itself. Each is a piece of the continent, A part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less. As well as if a promontory were. As well as if a manor of thine own Or of thine friend's were. Each man's death diminishes me, For I am involved in mankind. Therefore, send not to know For whom the bell tolls, It tolls for thee.
