IZZY’S STORY

On May 7, little Izzy, only 4 months old and 3 pounds, wandered into a good samaritan’s yard. It had appeared she walked from a roadside ditch and adjacent field, where she had likely been dumped.

A team member of Saving Sully took her in and immediately noted something was not right. Izzy was greatly favoring both her hind legs.

Upon taking her in to be assessed by the vet, it was confirmed that not one – but both of Izzy’s femurs were broken. According to the vet treating her – the manner in which her legs were bilaterally fractured was consistent with her being thrown from a moving vehicle.

In addition to the fractures, it was also discovered that Izzy’s right leg was infected – and the severity indicated that Izzy likely sat in that field for several days before making it to the yard.

IZZY’S SURGERIES AND INTERVENTIONS

Izzy had surgery to plate her fractures on May 13. The veterinarian and team describe her as a fighter and sweet as can be. Izzy was started on a strong course of antibiotics in hopes it was combat the infection.  The side effects of the antibiotics were taking quiet the toll on her little body, causing major abdominal distress, which the vet combated with more medications.

On the 18th, Izzy began to decline – going from wagging her tail and engaging in treatments to crying in pain. X-rays were taken and it was discovered both plates had failed. It is believed that due to the infection in her right leg, the integrity of the bone could not hold properly support the plates and screws and gave out, causing her to then favor her left leg and refracture.

May 19th Izzy had another surgery to repair the left leg, using larger plates and screws. The difficult decision was also made to amputate her right leg.

Her second surgical repair and amputation went well. Izzy is still in a significant amount of pain, but is being well loved on and taken care of by her foster home. She is now home and resting, receiving medications and tons of TLC.

Izzy’s journey is far from over. Not only did she have several MAJOR surgeries – she will require physical therapy and continued interventions and monitoring to ensure she makes a full recovery.

UPDATE 6/3 : Izzy will be making the journey to Wisconsin to continue her healing journey with the team at Saving Sully. She will require one more surgery to remove the pins in her leg. As of now, her vet bills have climbed to 8,500 - so we have updated this fundraiser to 10,000 dollars to account for her next surgery as well as any more interventions that may arise.
