With all the uncertainty surrounding Twitter, many democracy-minded activists have migrated to Mastodon to create a protected space rooted in open standards that is free from the arbitrary whims of capricious billionaires, repressive algorithms, and the pressures of an advertising-driven business model.

So in November 2022, Dave Troy, a technology entrepreneur turned researcher and investigative journalist, setup Toad.Social. Well known researcher-journalists Stephanie Koff (a.k.a. Lincoln's Bible), Greg Olear, and Aaron Harris worked with Bret Pettichord to establish Social.Snorklr.com, which has also been folded into the toad.social community.
