Goal
We care deeply for animals with special needs
SNAP or Special Needs Animal Project is a nonprofit initiative dedicated to helping animals with physical disabilities in Lebanon. We provides financial support for specialized veterinary care to those animals in need.
We do not have a shelter but we do our best to find experienced carers through our network and we are always looking for responsible people willing to open their hearts and homes for those special animals that need help. All or part of the medical bills and/or post-fostering food is covered on a case-by-case basis depending on the severity of the case and the available budget. We will also provide transportation and/or transportation costs to any approved foster or adopter within Lebanon.
HOW DO WE DEFINE “SPECIAL NEEDS”?
By definition, a “special needs” animal has a disease or physical disability that requires continuing care and attention above and beyond that of a normal one. Animals with conditions like Cerebral Hyperplasia (wobbly cat) or other issues that lead to dependence on humans such as missing limbs and blindness are those that most commonly called “special needs” animals.
How do we, at SNAP, define “special needs” and what are the cases we are able to support?
Any animal who needs extra care or a physical disability that makes him rely partially or fully on a human in order to live a normal happy life. Specifically animals with these conditions:
· Total hearing impairment
· Total vision impairment
· A physical disability (perhaps requiring a set of "wheels" or a bionic limb)
· Neurological issues like cerebellar hypoplasia, epilepsy, degenerative myelopathy
But, the term is also frequently applied to animals that have a terminal illness, have emotional disabilities that give rise to behavioral issues, have prescription lifetime dietary needs or are older and have age-related medical issues like chronic renal disease or hyperthyroidism.
Special needs pets are the most difficult for shelters and rescues to adopt out simply because many people fear the unknown or look upon animals with disabilities as "broken". But they are not!
We believe that it is fitting that “special” is part of their label as they are very special animals indeed. They are wonderful animals that are looking for someone to care for, love, and understand them and in return they will give unconditional love and companionship…
