Goal
Friday night during the winter storm we took in this tiny 6 week old boy. He had been vomiting since Wednesday evening and the owner's vet did a barium study and felt he had a possible aortic arch. They talked about euthanizing him Friday night if a rescue didn't step up for him. We wanted to give this boy a chance so we stepped up and took him in. We took him to our vet Saturday morning before they opened, they ran tests and did more x rays. It was confirmed the right side of his heart has an aortic arch and surgery is needed in the next three days. We rushed him up to Veterinary Specialty Center because we know they have the best specialists available, they admitted him through the ER. He is being monitored in the ER for now until the surgeons and cardiologist can consult regarding surgery Monday morning.
This is what we know so far. During development in the uterus, the fetus has a right and left aortic arch. Normally the left aortic arch forms the main artery that extends off the heart and travels to the abdominal region. If the right aortic arch develops into the aorta, the esophagus becomes trapped by a ligament that extends from the pulmonary artery (vessel that pumps blood to the lungs) and the aorta. In 95% of the cases of a vascular ring anomalie, a constricting band prevents solid foods from passing to the stomach which prevents the puppy from thriving well. In the remaining 5% of cases a bizarre anomalie of the vessels is present (double aortic arch and aberrant subclavian artery), which may be difficult to correct and may not have a good prognosis.
They will be doing blood work and ultra sounds and more x rays this weekend. He is a little fighter-so we are hoping we can fix this boy so he can have a wonderful full life ahead of him. This surgery is usually done on bigger and older pups- remember, he is only 6 weeks old and weighs 2 lbs currently -so this increases the risks for him and surgery may not be an option. If surgery isn't an option-then sadly euthanasia is our only option as he cannot keep food and water down currently.
Boarding and 24 hour care and further tests will run us $3,000 - we will get a full estimate of surgery if they give it thumbs up for him Monday-but it will run around $12,000 possibly.
We cannot help these special cases without your generosity and help. Please help give this boy a fighting chance to live a wonderful life. Please donate and share his story. Oh, we named him Ewan, very strong name comes from Ireland and means a young warrior. Fight like a Frenchie little man - our donors are going to come through and help you get strong and healthy hopefully.
