Help protect Canadian journalists from Indian police interference

Juno News is investigating student recruitment, alleged student scams, and the pipeline of human beings from Punjab to Canada. Now police in India are trying to get our journalism taken down.

X has notified our reporter Melanie Bennet that Punjab’s Cyber Crime Police requested the removal of two of her posts, alleging they violate Indian law.

A foreign police force is reaching into the work of a Canadian newsroom. We take that threat seriously.

Melanie Bennet and Harrison Faulkner have been investigating allegations involving student recruitment, Ontario’s student assistance system, and the businesses connecting India and Canada. We were planning to send them to India to follow the evidence. The police request raises serious questions about the risks they could face while doing that work.

We need qualified legal advice, representation, and appropriate protections before making decisions about their travel and reporting. We intend to stand behind our journalists.

Your contribution will help fund legal advice about the police request, representation to respond to and challenge demands targeting their work, and legal and security assessments concerning reporting, travel, and journalist safety.

These costs put pressure on an independent newsroom. Your support helps us meet them while our journalists continue their work.

Make a one-time contribution or become a monthly supporter to help sustain this as the situation develops.

Please give only what you can afford. Sharing this appeal also helps.
