MOMS teaches Sierra Leonean women to provide excellent maternity care, teach their neighbors, solve community problems, and be role models. These women are remarkable in their commitment to doing this work. For us to provide the initial training, peer review sessions, continuing education, and grant for each woman costs about $600. That is all.
To extend our reach all around Sierra Leone, we are training trainers, who are health care professionals. This program take about two years overall, divided into four six-week sessions and costs us about $2,000 per student.
At each training site, we offer several courses to the Ministry of Health staff working nearby. Classes range from "Current Evidence in Midwifery Care" to "Helping Babies Breathe," to "Writing a Business Plan." These classes cost us around $100 per person per class.
