Goal
I was born in Guatemala and have worked since very young as our family is very poor. I worked hard and also tried to get my education. However, when I was ready to go to university, my dad died suddenly. I was unable to go to university as I needed to work and support my mom and siblings.
I decided to come to the US to better help support my family. Since I came here I have worked in construction during good weather and then worked in snow removal during the cold weather. I work 12-16 hour days in all types of heat and cold.
A year and a half ago, I was diagnosed with testicular cancer. I was able to get surgery to remove it and then was told I was cancer free. At that time, they gave me the option to get chemo therapy as well for a higher chance of the cancer not returning. However, after the surgery I was not able to afford it.
Recently, I was having pain in my lower back and kidney. I thought it was due to heavy lifting at work. However, one morning I woke up to intense pain and had to come to the ER. They found that the cancer had returned.
I now have to have chemotherapy and radiation and am unable to afford the costs. I currently owe about $100,000 to the hospital and chemotherapy costs are about $20,000. They have not told me how much the radiation will be as it will depend on how much I need once done with the chemo. I also understand that I will need take very expensive medication for several years after the cancer is gone to be able to ensure it does not come back again.
I would not be able to get this treatment in my country of Guatemala as the treatments are not available in my area. Even if I could go to an area to get treatment, they do not have the higher treatment qualify as the US. I would have a very low chance of living a long life.
Thank you so much for taking the time to consider helping me with these expenses so that I can live a long life and continue to a supportive part of my family’s lives. God bless you.
