The Saint Faustina Conference of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society has created this campaign on behalf of the Hazen family; Curtis, Rebecca, Anthony, James, Daniel and Paul. The Hazen's are very active members of Saint Patrick Parish and the two youngest attend Saint Patrick School. Curtis is a Marine combat veteran and a licensed plumber. Curtis is generous with his time and on numerous occasions has worked weekends resolving major plumbing issues at the Paul Stefan Crisis Pregnancy Center in Orange, Virginia.
Two months ago their youngest child (seven years old) was experiencing alarming respiratory issues. After multiple visits to the emergency room failed to determine the root cause, they decided to have the house tested for mold. The lab testing for mold came back positive. Mold had spread due to sweating ducts behind the walls and under the floor.
The entire family, including two dogs and a cat have been displaced from their home for the last six weeks due to their son’s respiratory issues becoming too severe. The family is currently living with a generous Saint Patrick's parishioner.
Their seven-year-old son has suffered the most as a result of the mold exposure. Besides emergency room visits, a slew of medications, and missing weeks of school, he has undergone a lung biopsy at a children's hospital. As if this all wasn't bad enough, they hired a mold remediation company who promised a full remediation but turned out to be a scam. They were left with an empty house that still has mold. After the experience of that company, they decided to work on remediating it themselves with the help of friends and family.
The entire house has been emptied of anything that is permeable, that means almost all the furniture; couches, chairs, mattresses, kids toys, books...pretty much everything. They have removed all carpeting, flooring, large sections of drywall, and even some sub-flooring. They have treated surfaces and even had a friend loan them an air scrubber (to rid mold spores from the air). They still need to treat the affected areas, install new flooring, insulation, drywall, prime/paint the entire house, and acquire bedding and furniture.
Our conference has already hauled to the dump over two tons of debris from the house and assisted the family in purchasing supplies and food. The need here is much larger than the assistance our conference typically handles.
The Hazen's have $30,000 in outstanding medical bills, and expect at least $10,000 just to acquire the materials for a basic vinyl plank flooring which they will install themselves with the help of willing neighbors. A second mold treatment is scheduled this week which will cost $3,000.
Please consider assisting them financially. The resulting funds will be managed through our conference using our stringent rules and procedures to do the following:
- Complete the mold remediation.
- Purchase construction materials such as paint, drywall, flooring, insulation, etc.
- Pay for the medical bills incurred from the many visits to the ER and hospital for procedures/treatments.
- Purchase basic furniture to make the house livable.
Also, we ask that you pray for them during this difficult time. 1 John 5:14-15 says: "And this is the confidence that we have toward Him, that if we ask anything according to His will He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of Him."
We ask in any way you can, financially, socially, or spiritually, help us to get their family safely back in their home. A Meal Train has also been setup to help them through this difficult time, you can find it here: https://mealtrain.com/k3518z.
"But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing." - James 1:22-25
