What happens when a violin and a double bass find themselves locked in the same house?
During this quarantine, the violin of Guilherme Pimenta and the double bass of Pablo Arruda discovered that in the vastness of Rio de Janeiro, they two were destined to share the confinement. Instead of silencing their pitches in despair, they decided to travel around Brazil by playing its music.
Both erudite musicians who studied with the biggest names in the history of Brazilian music, Guilherme and Pablo have challenged each other to rediscover the sounds of their country, battling the common stereotypes while reinterpreting the tradition.
They’ll start densely and melancholically with Rio's samba triste, a delicate introduction into their world. Then, still in Rio, they'll explore choro, the oldest musical tradition that is truly Brazilian, as it mixes influences from Europe and Africa, baroque exuberance and injustices of slavery. Leaving the big city, Pablo will play a piece best characterised as jazz waltz, which he composed in Petrópolis, among the mountains, as he tried to soothe the pain of his childhood friend who’d lost his dog.
Both Guilherme and Pablo agree that bossa nova served as a soundtrack to their childhood, hence unavoidable during this trip. Same can be said about forró of the North-East. Associated with a popular dance, forró is Guilherme’s favourite, as despite its immediate appeal, it also allows for harmonic and melodic interpretations by the musician.
Abruptly, this imaginary travel will take us to the south of Brazil, where the ruling genre is chamamé, typical of the gauchos, with its tricky 3/4 structure. Finally, Guilherme and Pablo will put each other’s virtuosity to test with frevo, the rich, energetic and intricate genre from Recife, the capital of Pernambuco, where we’ll wait for them with our applause.

WHO IS ORGANISING THIS?
Invisible City, a non-profit that supports emerging artists. The communication support comes from Selina, a design-driven network of hostels for digital nomads. Part of the financial support comes from an individual donor who wished his name to be invisible. We are doing this because we all believe in fair pay for the emerging artists and meeting each other online, despite the quarantine.
HOW DOES THIS WORK?
Once you make a donation, we’ll send you a ticket with a secret code to the virtual room on Zoom. We have a professional Zoom account for maximum quality, and the artists have proper gear that we’ve tested over and over during our soundcheck.
HOW CAN I CONTRIBUTE?
We encourage you to make a donation on behalf of every person who’ll assist this online concert together with you. We believe that 4 Euros per person is fair, yet if you have the means and wish to support the artist and Invisible City further, we’d be grateful if your donation corresponds to what feels fairest to you.
If it is easier for you, you can also make a donation directly to the Invisible City account:
