As a startup nonprofit with an ambitious vision, we need you to help us GROW! Through our annual fundraiser, the GROWTESTRA Campaign, we aim to raise $5,000.
First assembled in 2017 and formally incorporated in 2020, PROTESTRA (protest + orchestra) is a 501(c)(3) organization that bridges the divide between advocacy and classical music. PROTESTRA’s grassroots orchestral benefit concerts inspire activism by contextualizing classical music performance through multimedia education, and turn voluntary audience donations into targeted support for mission- and policy-driven groups related to the concerts’ themes. PROTESTRA’s new vision for classical music prioritizes diversity, equity, inclusion, and representation in both its hiring and programming practices. Additionally, PROTESTRA maintains a robust social media presence, creating and sharing original content and resources with 9,000+ followers across multiple platforms.
Music in Action: Heritage Against Hate, held in May 2021, was a celebration of AAPI Heritage Month through music, art, and discussion in partnership with Asian Musical Voices of America & Colors of Classical Music. We gathered in solidarity with our API-identifying artists and used music to take a stand against rising xenophobia and anti-Asian sentiment in the U.S. throughout the past year. We raised $300 each for Heart of Dinner and Friends of ANIM (Afghanistan National Institute of Music).

Take a Stand: A Concert for Climate Action featured timeless classics inspired by natural landscapes and contemporary compositions written about humanity’s relationship with the environment, all presented within the context of the climate crisis. We invited several guest speakers, including climate scientists and activists, to educate our audience about how they can live more sustainably and take action to protect the Earth. We raised $500 each for our featured charity organizations, WE ACT for Environmental Justice and the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF).
Breaking the Bias: A Concert for Women's History Month was inspired by this year’s theme of International Women’s Day and featured works for chamber ensembles written by women composers. These composers and their works are representative of women overcoming gender-based discrimination in the field of classical music throughout history, from the 17th century to the present day. The purpose of this concert was to highlight a wide variety of women composers, celebrate women’s achievements in the face of systemic and cultural barriers, and raise awareness about intersectional biases against women of diverse backgrounds.
Why We Need Your Support
Through our GROWTESTRA fundraiser, we aim to crowdfund $5,000 to fund our upcoming concerts. Every dollar donated will go towards paying our passionate performers a fair wage, supporting company growth, and running a successful startup nonprofit.
We believe today’s orchestras can and should be grassroots operations that serve and are supported by their community. We intend for PROTESTRA to be an orchestra for the 21st century, an orchestra by and for the people. Whether you have $1 or $1,000, PROTESTRA strives to represent everyone—from the composers we program and the artists we collaborate with, to the issues we advocate for and the audiences we serve.
We hope you'll consider financially supporting our young organization and in doing so, uplifting diverse artistic voices, advocating for important causes, and creating a more equitable future for classical music.
Make a contribution in any amount and you'll receive the link to view our most recent concert, "Breaking the Bias: A Concert for Women's History Month," as our thanks. The virtual concert is available to view on our YouTube channel through the end of the month—we hope you'll donate and tune in!
