Goal
“Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker,
but whoever is kind to the needy honours God.”
- Proverbs 14:31
Inspired by the verse above, the theme for this year’s challenge is 14:31
We’ve decided to walk from Becky's home in Kew to Westminster Bridge along the Thames path which happens to be 14.3 miles!
*Although originally planned for Sat 7th, we will now be walking on Saturday 29th June*
In Pakistan, education is often out of reach for Christian children. Poor and marginalised communities cannot afford the fees to send their children to school, leaving them illiterate and destined for low-wage, labour-intensive work. Starfish Asia seeks to reverse this trend by supporting schools and projects that offer children the chance to stay in education, gain skills and achieve qualifications that will enable them to secure stable employment, thus breaking the cycle of poverty.
One such school is the New Life School in Bahawalpur. Set up by two sisters in 2017, the school started with just 23 children. Due to their hard work, passion and determination, coupled with support from Starfish since 2018, today the school currently has 11 staff members and provides education for 180 children from 3 years old up to 16. Many of their students have gone on to receive scholarship support for further and higher education, with some returning to the school to teach while others have careers in the military and business.
The cost to support this school is aprox £525 per month. Which means that just £3 per month can give a child an education for a month.
