Goal
Since 2014, CAN has been combating poverty in the U.S. Virgin Islands through education, job training, disaster management, outreach and advocacy. Since the devastating hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017, the high school dropout rates have doubled in USVI. Juvenile crime on the island of St.Thomas has increased, safe housing remains a challenge, skilled job training and access to financial literacy is limited, substance abuse and mental health support needs have increased while resources to meet the growing needs remains a challenge.
During this current incredible global challenge, our work at CAN has become even more crucial.
Through our program 50 at risk youth will complete our high school diploma program, job training, and life skills training which includes financial Literacy and entrepreneurship training annually. The vast majority of students in our education and training programs do not own laptops and lack access to the internet. Right now, these students are unable to access our free education programming, and most importantly-- financial literacy preparedness training.
Financial literacy is a fundamental key to self sufficiency. Our free financial literacy preparedness training empowers program participants with the tools needed to understand, build and repair their credit, prepare a personal budget, understand the importance of life insurance and assist them with opening their own bank accounts as well as prepare them with an understanding of the importance of saving for their future of becoming self-sufficient.
Today our goal is to provide 50 at-risk youth with laptops, 4G hotspot devices, and wifi for one year. Through Mobile Beacon, we are able to purchase wifi services at 20% of the cost. We are also able to purchase laptops at 50% of the retailer costs.
Thank you. Your generosity transforms lives. Please share this with your friends and family!
