The play space on the grounds of Gads Hill Center's Pilsen site here on Cullerton Street in Chicago provides an accessible and safe place where our service program participants can de-stress as they are dropped off from school, gather on the play structure for free reading time, and more. Kids often group around different features of the play structure such as bridges, slides, and more for unique activities that vary between the age groups.
However, at this time, the condition of our onsite play structure has been deemed too hazardous for play. Damage to its bridge, sharp areas near breakages, and other wear and tear have led to this vital amenity being closed off to the children of Gads Hill Center.
The Need
Gads Hill Center understands play structures to be one of the best tools for building physical, cognitive, and social skills. Our children need a way to go outside, get fresh air, release pent-up energy, and get Vitamin D, all in a safe place.
Research and experience have taught us that a high-quality playspace provides kids opportunities to test their fine and gross motor skills, exercise their imaginations through inventive play, practice cooperating and solving problems with others, and releasing stress; as such, play structures are one of the optimal tools not only for providing a productive recess activity, but also for helping to stimulate emotional self-regulation and brain development among our students.
Although there are other play spaces in the nearby community, due to the prevalence of community violence we prefer to stay in a fenced-in area that is near to the building than to have to walk a few blocks away.
Furthermore, because all families are welcome to public play spaces our staff is challenged to effectively monitor our kids as other players are constantly entering and leaving the park.
Gads Hill Center, a social services organization (501-C3) founded in 1898, helps children and their families build a better life through education, access to resources, and community engagement.
