Goal

It takes us a long and bumpy three-hour ride on untarred roads from Accra to Adaklu Waya. The village is characterized by small stone huts and is surrounded by mountains, green forests and farmed fields. Despite many people work in local farming, fishing and forestry, the seclusion of the village is still a huge challenge. This can especially be perceived in the education sector. Although hundreds of children from the region come here every morning to go to school, the number of teachers is not nearly sufficient to provide an adequate learning environment for all the students. The small classrooms, which are sometimes even lacking walls, are overcrowded when one of the few teachers holds a lesson on writing, reading, maths and science. Besides these conditions, pencils, paper sheets and books and rarely available and pose a huge challenge as well. The vision of our PIECES project in Ghana is to make a quality learning environment possible for all students and to bridge the gap between rural and urban education.

How do we do this?
Twice a year we send a dedicated group of students from University of St.Gallen to Adaklu Waya to support the local school as teaching assistants. After having undergone a training program on how to teach, our volunteers spend at least three weeks in Adaklu Waya. Although English is the main language in Ghana, children in rural areas understand only a little and have major difficulties in writing and reading English textbooks. This is however essential to close the gap between rural and urban regions and to provide children with the same opportunities across the country. This is the reason why we see our greatest potential to support local schools in sharing our knowledge of English with these children.

Just imagine now, when you were young: Everybody of us remembers, when our parents had to convince us to wake up in the mornings to go to school. Living in Europe we take education for granted and we mostly do not even see the great value in it. Think about how much more independent you got since you know how to read and write. Think about how many new doors have opened for you and how many thriving opportunities you have faced since then. Education should be a right for everybody and you can help us to support this equal ground!

Every PIECES project is funded individually. For the PIECES project in Adaklu Waya, we look for new sponsors and run own events and funding initiatives every year. Only if we succeed in finding enough financial support, we are able to run this project and send our volunteers to the small village. With the money we receive we compensate local families for hosting our volunteers as well as providing our volunteers with food during their stay. It is not much needed to realize the project, but we need your support!

If you want to help us realize our vision, you can directly donate through our PIECES website and help us make the world a better place – piece by piece.
