Sometimes when we meet families with exceptional needs, we can help their journey to peace and safety be less traumatic with financial support for things like food, clothing, toys for little ones, travel expenses, and shelter. There are thousands of families in need of this support, but to keep the program accountable, efficient, and honest, we only use this program when we are presented with a situation that we have first hand, personal experience with, and we know the money will go directly to a specific purpose. In the past, we have funded flights for a Syrian mother and son to be reunited with extended family after other family members were killed by ISIS, suitcases and other travel expenses for a Syrian family of 5 traveling to Germany to be reunited with their teenage son/brother, and food for refugees living in tents outside of a refugee camp on the island of Lesvos. In all three cases, we spent weeks developing relationships with the recipients and were filled with joy as we became a part of their lives and their journey.
With our friends in Athens, we work to identify families who have a specific, immediate need for financial support, and the means to collect the money via MoneyGram. We are currently raising money for a family reunification (mother and 4 children arrived via raft to Lesvos on March 27 with nothing after multiple attempts to escape war, reuniting with the father/husband, who worked with us for weeks in Lesvos using his construction and translation skills to help improve conditions for other refugees while living in horrific conditions himself) and dental care for the leader of the Moria Bracelet Project, a program we started with a group of African refugees last summer.
