Goal
Hello, everyone. My name is Katelyn Durkee. I live in Midcoast Maine and have been working as a Registered Nurse for the last four years. Becoming a nurse has been one of the best decisions of my life. This career path has given me the fulfillment of helping others and has allowed me to learn every day. I have been given the opportunity to travel to the Philippines in February of 2025 as part of a volunteer medical mission providing free medical services to the rural northern Bohol Province. I am very excited for this opportunity to travel to a new place and provide medical care to individuals in need. My role at this time is to take part in a fundraiser that will help cover the costs of medication and supplies used for services provided. My goal is to raise $1000 by December 31, 2024. Any amount means so much to me, so thank you in advance for your generous donations.
The HAND-Philippines Holiday Fundraiser is a dynamic peer-to-peer campaign spearheaded by our medical mission volunteers. This important initiative aims to fund medicines and supplies necessary to provide free care services to indigent patients during our medical mission, such as cataract operations, major elective surgeries, acute hospital inpatient care, and urgent/outpatient services through our five outpatient mobile clinics, each representing the five Rural Health Units (RHUs) in our service area. Our lofty goal for our medical mission in 2025 is to serve at least 2,000 patients in northern Bohol Province.
Our dedicated volunteers actively seek support from their networks, inviting you to join us in this noble endeavor. If you are reading this message, it may have come to you through one of our passionate advocates. It is important to note that our volunteers cover their travel expenses and other non-patient care costs associated with the mission trip. Your donations, on the other hand, directly fund surgeries, medications, laboratory tests, and other essential healthcare services.
This fundraiser stems from our grassroots origins, responding to the urgent medical needs of communities affected by natural disasters in 2013. As we strive to expand our reach and enhance our impact, we remain devoted to organic growth, ensuring every contribution is directed toward lifesaving medical assistance. Together, we can honor this mission and create a lasting change in the lives of those we serve.
Consider the stories of individuals in these communities: a fisherman who has endured years of hardship and is now losing his sight to cataracts; a young child born with a cleft palate, bravely facing challenges in eating, speaking, and connecting with peers; a mother battling severe anemia due to prolonged uterine bleeding. These narratives are not just abstract. They reflect the heart-wrenching realities for countless individuals in underserved areas of the Philippines.
Many of these individuals' hopes hinge on procedures often viewed as routine. Yet, access to healthcare in rural regions is severely limited due to widespread poverty. Many families depend on subsistence farming or fishing, making healthcare a luxury they cannot afford. Tragically, preventable conditions frequently lead to unnecessary suffering and loss of life.
In addition to these crucial medical mission services, we also support five struggling RHUs in our service area. These RHUs are essential lifelines in their communities, offering vital primary medical care that many would otherwise go without. From managing chronic conditions to providing preventative care and maternal and child health services, they are at the forefront of the fight for health equity.
Join us in this transformative mission. Your contribution, regardless of its size, can profoundly impact the lives of those we serve. From restoring sight and performing childhood surgeries to facilitating life-saving interventions, you have the power to bring about remarkable change.
Let’s turn compassion into action together. Donate today and become part of something truly meaningful! Together, we can rewrite the stories of resilience and hope for those who need it most.
