Morgan's Story:
When I was a student at James Madison University (Go Dukes!) I participated in two Alternative Spring Break trips. I signed up for these experiences because I wanted to the opportunity to travel, meet new people, and spend a week volunteering. Flash forward several years and I was invited by a dear friend to join her church for a week of rebuilding in Chalmette, Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina. This week rocked my core and influenced my career path to follow my passion of service to others. With the help of a few fateful connections, I co-founded the Alternative Spring Break Program, Mission I'm Home, at Stevenson University based on what I experienced as a student at JMU mixed with a newly identified love of disaster response. Mission: I'm Home connected hundreds of students with a week of meaningful service in areas impacted by natural disasters. The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly consistent: these trips changed their lives. Students changed majors, sought internships within the nonprofit sector, established life long friendships, and found influential role models. I can say without a doubt, service trips change lives. I can also admit that service trips have changed my life.
I am thrilled to announce a new program created by Break a Difference called FROM: BALTIMORE to provide this same life changing experience to young adults from Baltimore. The magic discovered on an Alternative Spring Break trip should not be limited to those in college with the resources to pay for such an experience. Over the course of the 8 months, participants will travel for a service-learning trip, build leadership skills, practice mindfulness exercises, explore social causes that matter to them, deepen their connection to Baltimore City's social impact sector, and begin to explore future pathways to a life with purpose.
The program will be completely free for participants, focusing on providing the opportunity to underserved Baltimore City residents. This means Break A Difference will need to fundraise, apply for grants, and seek sponsorships to cover the $3,000 cost per participant for the 8-month accelerator.
I have committed to fundraising $3,000 to cover the cost of one participant in FROM: BALTIMORE. I hope you will make a gift today and support the positive impact this program will create.
From: Baltimore is an 8-month civic engagement accelerator that builds an equity pipeline into the social impact sector. We accomplish this by utilizing immersive & educational volunteering to infuse life-changing empowerment & purpose into young people's lives.
