The Freedom Flight Fifty Project
Underdog International and Harbin SHS saving dogs from the meat trade in 2020
What is the ‘Freedom Flight’ project?
UK registered charity, Underdog International has joined forces with China-based rescue shelter, Harbin SHS to fly as many meat trade rescue dogs to the UK as possible, to live out their lives as they deserve - with love and affection in their own family.
This is especially challenging at the moment due to the transport restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and knowing that the shelter has over 400 dogs rescued with nowhere to go - volunteers cannot currently act as flight escorts to get these dogs to their new families, as they would usually - this means that the dogs will need to fly a different (much more expensive) way.
Right now, the only way to get dogs anywhere in the world from China is cargo to Europe at a cost of nearly £3000 ($3750) per dog (including paperwork, cargo fee, import tax and transport to the UK). Charter flights are not allowed and flights to the US are not currently possible.
Before the pandemic, and before borders closed in February, over 100 dogs a month overseas were being flown overseas from SHS.
There are huge hurdles to overcome, the logistics of the transport from ‘door to door’ are complex and fragile, but we have had some success, with 6 dogs arriving in July.
Phases of Freedom
1. Organise transport
2. Raise funds and awareness
3. Get dogs ‘fit to fly’
4. Find adoption families
To make this possible, we need to raise funds for the transport, boarding and paperwork fees needed to bring these deserving dogs their freedom flight.
Adoption fees for a dog from China are £1250. This adoption fee will still be paid by those adopting a Freedom Flight dog, but the fundraising will cover the shortfall – and, the more we raise, the more dogs we can fly!
