Support FoodCaresBOSTON...Together We can Feed our Community thru Our Community!
There is a crisis in our city that together we can solve. Thousands of families, mothers and children do not know where their next meal will come from...especially within the populations we serve in Boston living in public housing there are over 10,000 families with over 7000 children under the age of 18 that continue to go hungry or do not have the basic nutrition needed to thrive.
FACTS:
- 1 IN 9 Families in Eastern Massachusetts do not know where their next meal will come from.
- 10% of Boston residents are food insecure or do not have the resources to purchase food.
- There are over 375,000 food insecure households in Massachusetts.
We began FoodCaresBOSTON to answer the immediate need of children being out of school during this past summer causing an absence of regular breakfast and lunches. Our efforts thus far have distributed thousands of pounds of food in just a few months to mothers and families in need but we realize that our support and delivery must continue on.
According to a report by Children’s HealthWatch, “Too Hungry to Learn: Food Insecurity and School Readiness,” food insecurity in early in a child’s life has long-term effects. Teenagers who had insufficient nutrition in infancy were more likely to have lower test scores on achievement tests, as well as more likely to skip a grade. The report also showed that food insecurity is tied to iron-deficiency anemia in young children, which hurts the development of basic motor skills and social skills.
Every week the families we support receive approximately 15 pounds of fresh fruits, vegetables and healthy grocery items at no cost. Specifically we are helping mothers and children that are faced with a myriad of socioeconomic challenges that create immense barriers to having equitable access or the resources to eating healthy and nutritious food. BUT...We need your support to reach and provide for more families tomorrow than we are today.
Please help sustain our connection so that we can feed as many families and children as possible in our city of Boston. Your donation is tax deductible and we thank you, our community thanks you and the families & children that you support thank you as well!
