The Challenge: Covering more than 70% of the Earth’s surface, the world’s waters play a significant role in the balance of our food and climate systems. When their existence is endangered, ours is too. The growing demand for seafood worldwide is putting immense pressure on wild fish stocks, limiting access for local communities, and harming ocean health. Overfishing, pollution, habitat loss, and climate change are threatening the health of our waters and the foods that come from them.

What Can be Done: There is hope in the water! When responsibly caught or harvested, blue food provides an abundance of restorative opportunities for environmental, economic, and global health. Responsibly produced seafood means improved wild fisheries management and fishing practices. It means innovation, cleaner practices, and using fewer resources to grow and harvest it. And it means maintaining and creating decent livelihoods for our water fishers, farmers, and harvesters. New technological advancements for harvesting and producing offer hope for innovative solutions amidst the ongoing environmental challenges. And we, at Fed by Blue, travel the globe to discover these breakthrough innovations on the water that could not only feed us but help save our threatened seas and fresh waterways.

How Fed By Blue is Meeting the Challenge: Fed by Blue is a science-led education campaign that inspires ocean lovers, activists, early adopters, foodies, and consumers with the knowledge and materials to help participate in creating a responsible blue food system. Fed by Blue aims to broaden access to responsibly produced blue food through increased transparency, empowering people to make responsible blue food choices, improving education, and supporting better policies and practices. We see the imperative to restore our ocean and water resources, responsibly produce seafood, and do so in an equitable way for all.
