Participants will discover Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) traditions by sculpting, painting, and decorating their own paper mache creations during the ofrenda making workshop. We will use recycled materials and learn more about this celebration from Mexican-American fiber artist marina g cano. Día de Muertos is a traditional Mexican three-day celebration of beloved family members that have passed. This pre-Hispanic celebration began 3,000-year-ago in Mesoamerica, marking death as central to their cosmology and an integral part of the belief system that made sense of the cycles of life, the seasons, and the mystery of what lay beyond life.
Students are invited to bring any craft materials they may have at home and photos of past loved ones. Consider use of the multiple, such as tooth picks or googly eyes.
