Plant Adaptations to Fire Ecology Educational Hike

This free guided hike, led by FUSEE volunteer Logan Keister, will explore how plants along the McKenzie River adapt after fire. This hike will follow the McKenzie River near Deer Creek through the 2021 Knoll Fire burn area in the Willamette National Forest where participants can observe a post-fire ecosystem where native plants have a chance to thrive, post-fire features such as snags and hollowed wood offer animal and bird habitats, and listen to the serene sounds offered by the river. 🔥🌼

This hike is easy to moderate in difficulty, mostly flat with some hills and rough terrain. The hike will follow the McKenzie River National Scenic Recreational Trail, approximately 2.5 to 3 miles total distance. Children age 10+ are welcome and must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Well-behaved dogs welcome.

This is a great nature-based learning opportunity on a holiday weekend (July 4th is the most fire-prone day of the year) to increase your fire ecology and native plant intelligence and connect with other fire and flora lovers or budding enthusiasts.

About Logan: Logan is an herbalist, wildcrafter, botanist, writer, farmer, and permaculture designer, born and raised in Oregon. Logan is a lifelong student and would love to exchange any and all nature-based knowledge with hike participants, including possible sampling of wild edible plants! 🌱
